Somerville Appointed Senior VP of Patient Care Services, CNO
Jacqueline G. Somerville, PhD, RN, has been appointed to the position of senior vice president of Patient Care Services and chief nursing officer, effective Jan. 3, 2011.
“Dr. Somerville will build upon the important and meaningful work that the departments of Nursing and Patient Care Services have begun in the past few years,” said BWH President Betsy Nabel, MD. “With her depth and breadth of nursing and leadership experience, Dr. Somerville will help us further strengthen our ability to deliver the best patient care in the safest environment.”
Somerville comes to BWH from Massachusetts General Hospital, where she has served as associate chief nurse of the MGH Cancer Center, Surgical Services, Orthopedics and Neuroscience Nursing since 2001. As an associate nurse scientist at MGH, she and her colleagues developed an instrument to measure patient care associate work environment satisfaction.
Prior to joining MGH, Somerville served at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center as interim vice president of Patient Care Services and, before that, as director of Perioperative Nursing. She also has held leadership roles at New England Medical Center, first as a nurse manager and then as a vice chair of Surgical Nursing and interim co-chair of the Department of Nursing.
A long-time Boston resident, Somerville completed her bachelor’s and PhD in Nursing at Boston College and her master’s in Nursing Administration at Boston University.
“I am humbled by the opportunity to serve the BWH community,” said Somerville. “The energy and pride I experienced during the interview process was incredible. I look forward to working with all to continue to advance and support excellence in patient care.”
